At first glance Benetton’s t-shirts might seem harmless enough, but in the current climate of campaigns and spokespeople highlighting pervasive sexism in our society it’s not so understandable. The t-shirts made only for girls, not boys, suggests that a dislike of maths is gender specific.
Put this alongside the impact of media and mainstream ‘beauty’ worth over other talents and abilities in women and girls’ daily lives, and we can see how this type of message contributes to the problem of under representation of women in the fields of science and engineering. Thanks Benetton.
